The Open Rate Keywords Boosting Trick

Mailchimp researchers studied approximately 24 billion emails subject lines composed of 22,000 distinct words. They filtered out the following words as critical ones when measuring email open rates.

These words will cause an increase in open rate when used in the email title:

  1. +0.79 Using the word “Urgent”
  2. +0.68 Using the word “Breaking”
  3. +0.57 Using the word “Thank You”
  4. +0.55 Using the word “Important”
  5. +0.46 Using the word “Announcement”
  6. +0.34 Using the word “Invitation” / “Invited”
  7. +0.34 Using the word “Freebie”
  8. +0.33 First & last name
  9. +0.32 “Announcing”
  10. +0.31 Using the word “Alert”
  11. +0.02 Using the word “Free” (no effect)

These words will cause a decrease in open rate. Not recommended for use:

  • -0.56 Using the word “Donate”
  • -0.45 Using the word “Last Chance”
  • -0.40 Using the word “Cancelled”
  • -0.29 Using the word “Reminder”
  • -0.18 Using the word “Charity”

The numbers are in Standard Deviation where minus signals a decrease in open rate, 0 stands for no change and 1.0 stands for an amazing increase in open rate.
